Webinar Title: Why Social Workers are Essential to Interdisciplinary Forensic Practice
Presenter: Devon W. Ferguson, MSS, MLSP, LSW
Virtual Location: Zoom Events
Registration: Free
Trauma-informed practice requires that social workers pay attention to the impact of oppression and marginalization, and how these experiences may impact clients’ willingness and ability to engage in services. Social workers and other professionals working within legal systems often wonder why clients are disengaged, resistant, and even hostile to support and intervention. Social workers can help other professionals to understand these challenging behaviors in the context of racism, poverty, and other forms of discrimination and marginalization. To effectively communicate across disciplines, social workers must learn to frame their perspectives and assessments in ways that other professionals will find relatable and applicable. By doing so, social workers can guide interdisciplinary teams to view challenging client behaviors with more empathy, in turn leading to more empowering, strengths-based professional-client relationships.
This webinar presentation reviews social workers’ ethical obligations to clients, communities, and organizations with a focus on clients who are involved in various legal systems. This talk also offers practical tips for how social workers can communicate with interdisciplinary team members to improve understanding of challenging client behavior, leading to better engagement and outcomes.
